When you picture a child or adult with ADHD, what comes to mind? Probably a laud, disruptive, can not sit still Tasmanian Devil-like entity destroying everything in their path. Although the Hyper-Active-Impulsive type is very common in children and boys/man, there are 2 types of ADHD that tend to fall under the radar which are more prevalent in girls/women and are harder to diagnose, often leading to a very late in life diagnosis or in most cases not at all. These 2 types are known in the medical field as Inattentive and Combined type of ADHD. Here are the 6 (3 for each type) signs you may have one of the 2.
- You are a Perpetual Day-Dreamer ( The Space Cadet)
Now, everyone is capable of getting lost in a mind-haze, but for you the places and lengths you travel to in your head are endless and so intoxicating that you can get lost in the middle of a conversation or a very important meeting. As someone who has this type of ADHD I was known for walking ahead of a friend in the middle of a conversation, it wasn’t that I found the conversation boring and I certainly wasn’t trying to be rude, I would just find myself getting swept away by a thought in my head so strongly that I would start walking faster. Finding a creative outlet for your over-active imagination such as: painting, writing or dancing can serve as a great tool to turning this into a not only positive but very welcome attribute.
2. You are always loosing things ( The Human Bermuda Triangle)
Keys, wallets, phones, pens, sticky notes, glasses you name it, no matter how big or small you will find a way to loose it, its almost as thou you take it as a personal challenge or life mission to loose immanent objects lol. This is partially due to the fact that once your ADHD brain leaves one room, you are completely done with that room almost as thou you were never in it in the first place. Its like Vegas, whatever happens in that room stays in that room! Always double or triple check before leaving any space.
3. Hyper- Focusing ( The Human Laser)
This one truly is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand it’s great because it gifts you with this unmatched ability to learn things that interest you very quickly and with great determination and precision, some may even call this being in-flow. On the other hand it can sometimes lead to neglecting very important less interesting tasks such as chores, homework or even forgetting to eat. or sleep. I find that setting a timer can help with this.
4. You have a hard time focusing and staying on task ( The Oh Look At The Shiny)
” Hey didn’t you just say we hyperfocus??? ” Yes! ADHD is a fickle friend, it gives you the ability to both loose interest very easily and hyperfocus depending on your investment or interest in the topic. Its difficult for any average person to stay focused on something that is of no interest to them personally, but for someone with ADHD its like torture. One way to combat this is by performing these tasks for short periods of time.
5. You Take On Lots Of Projects Yet You Struggle With Completion ( The Lazy Enthusiastic)
This one correlates more with the Combined type of ADHD. You are the yes person, you get easily exited by new ideas, projects and concepts, you are full of piss and vinegar at the start of things however you find your self less than enthusiastic when it comes to the nitty-gritty of any given task, you overwhelm yourself by taking on too much therefore struggling to pull on through to the finish line. Try to cut yourself some slack and focus on one project at a time, or simply take on less.
6. You Procrastinate (The Time Burglar)
ADHD procrastination is NOT like regular procrastination and it ties in with all the other ADHD symptoms, such as daydreaming, loosing track of time, difficulty staying focused because they all ultimately lead to PROCRASTINATION. Because a lot of people with undiagnosed ADHD, particularly the Inattentive and Combined types have been told that they are incapable of doing anything wright, they tend to procrastinate due to fear of failure, perfectionism and ADHD burnout which is a whole other topic for another article. The best cure for this to be aware of it and practise positive self-talk, meditation and/or exercise prior to beginning any task which requires a long amount concentration.
Many of these and other ADHD symptoms tend to overlap all across the 3 types, however the Inattentive and Combined type overlap in so many ways that it may be very difficult to tell the difference. There so many contradictions to these 2 types of ADHD, you are always in a hurry yet you are often late, you procrastinate yet you get so much done, you forget many things yet you have an uncanny memory and the ability to remember the strangest details that no one else can. The important thing is to speak with your physician or trusted consular about these struggles and find ways to manage them. Above all else, please remember that you are not lazy, you are not damaged, you are not stupid, you are not irresponsible and there are many beautiful and mysterious ways to the way your mind works. You are creative, enthusiast, intelligent and filled with idealistic ideas, now go share them.
