The lazy girl workout: 5 easy ways to stay in shape outside of the gym.

Lets face it folks, no one feels like working out every-single day or even every week for that matter and if you do than I sincerely hate you lol. As the cooler months are descending upon us and our holiday shopping schedule is ramping up faster than we would like it to, our health and fitness regime is often the first thing to suffer, inevitably leading to feelings of guilt, failure or even depression. However staying in shape doesn’t have to feel so overwhelming, nor does it have to interfere with our daily routine or our prerogative to chill out once in a while. Let me share my top 5 exercises I incorporate into my daily routine without leaving my house.

5. Hip Thrusts in bed

Hip thrusts are one of the most effective ways to isolate the quadricep muscle from the glutes, and its a great way to wake up the often lazy glute muscle.

While listening to your favorite audio book on your bed or on the floor, lay down on your back, bend your knees, place a dumbbell across the front of your hips, make sure you hang on to the dumbbell preventing it from sliding down, slowly lift your pelvis and squeeze your butt cheeks at the top, than slowly lower back down. Repeat this movement 5 to 10 times for 3 to 4 sets. If you don’t own a dumbbell or weight of any kind try using a thick book or perform the movement with no added resistance. Feel free to play with your stance, try taking your legs wider or come up on your heels or toes.

4. Squats in the kitchen

Squats are a fantastic and highly affective way to strengthen your thighs.

While cooking your favorite meal and waiting for something to boil, spontaneously drop down into a series squats. keep your shoulders down, back straight, belly tucked in but don’t forget to breathe! Mindfully hinge at the hips and push your bum back as you lower down into your squat and slowly come back into a standing position. I recommend using a resistance band around your thighs if you want to make it more challenging. Perform the exercise for 15 to 30 seconds and increase up to 1 minute over time.

3. Netflix crunches (Sitting or standing)

I know crunches have a bit of a controversial reputation, and our backs don’t always love them, but did you know that that standing or seated crunches don’t irritate the spine as much?

While watching your favorite Netflix series, stand up, place your hands behind your head (like you are under arrest), take your legs wide and bow down while keeping your back straight, and return into a standing position. If you don’t want to stand, have a seat on the floor, take your legs apart and perform the same movement while seated. Do this movement slowly and with control as many times as you like.

4. Stairway to wellness

Do you have stairs in your home? Building? Office space?

If you want to increase lower body strength, improve cardiovascular health, increase vitality and stamina, skip the elevator and try walking or running the stairs. Once you reach the top of the steps do a set of push ups on the railing to add upper body work. If you are partaking in this activity at home, use a set of dumbbells for bicep curls or triceps extensions. There is a full body workout right there! Not to mention you can use the railing for stretches.

5. The I don’t care who’s watching dance

Last but certainly not least way to stay in shape in the comfort of your own home.

Put on your favorite uplifting, empowering but-shaking playlist and dance your ass off! Not only does dancing improve coordination, mood, alertness, and physical fitness but its so much fun and remember no one is watching you, so might as well get crazy with it.

Do not forget to stretch post any kind of strenuous activity and consult your doctor if you experience any discomfort or pain. Increase these activities depending on fitness level and continue to incorporate movement into your daily life, this will increase your chances of sticking to health and wellness until it will feel like second nature.
