Confessions Of A Lazy Fitness Instructor
I love the gym. To me It’s so much more than just a place to work out, it’s my sanctuary when I feel sad, angry, lazy, lost or out of control. It showers me with a sense of comfort while providing an escape from the harsh realities of everyday life. So when Covid hit, I was forced to invent new and sustainable ways to keep fit without my safe space. Here are a few things I learned along the way.
Keep It Simple
Let me tell you a secret, the number one reason why we don’t keep up with our fitness routines is because we overcomplicate our goals, we make them too grandiose and overwhelming to manage on a consistent basis. Truth is, you don’t have to do a lot, the most important task is to stay consistent. So keep it simple and short, if you want to do more, you can!
- Try short workouts, 10 to 30 minutes a day.
- Stick to simple, bodyweight movements such as crunches, pushups, squats, bicep curls ( you don’t have to swing a kettlebell while skipping rope on a Bosu Ball just saying).
- Embrace activities you enjoyed as a child, such as, swimming, skating, dancing, team sports.
Utilise your environment
When you don’t have access to a fitness facility you have to work with what you got. Do you have stairs in your house or condo building? Fantastic! Use them, what a great way to boost cardio health while strengthening the glutes, thighs, calf muscle and hips. Start slow if you are at the start of your health journey by walking one or two flights a day and increase the number of floors as you progress. Try walking the steps while carrying light dumbbells for that extra challenge or leave them at the top of the stairs and perform a few light exercises once you reach the top of the stairs each time. Embrace online workouts, Youtube is filled with thousands if not millions of beginner friendly to advance fitness classes of all kinds. If it’s warm enough, go outside! Run hills or just walk around the block a few times. Use a wall for Yoga or Pilaties workouts, this will significantly improve your form, posture and alignment.
Set Up A Rewards System
Who doesn’t love a prize? I must confess that if I did not get paid to workout, my fitness routine would suffer tremendously. Money is a great incentive for sure! Set up a system where you reward yourself for every workout. Maybe tell yourself that you can’t watch your favourite Netflix show until you perform 50 squats, for every 3 pounds shed book yourself a massage, go to your favourite restaurant after a long walk or hike. Celebrate your accomplishments.
Plant Small Fitness Equipment Around You
This one works really well for me personally. I love to place fitness equipment all throughout my house. I may have 2 small dumbbells in my bedroom closet, a pair of sliders in the living room or a resistance band underneath my coffee table. This way I am able to grab these items at any time to do a quick workout, it keeps me accountable and the items are small enough not to get in the way. This may not be for everyone but it has made a huge difference for me.
Conclusion
So what did we learn? Don’t overwhelm yourself by keeping it simple, you don’t have to do these hardcore 1 to 2 hour workouts in order to stay in shape, just do something and keep it fun and fresh. Take advantage of your surroundings. Motivate yourself with rewards and set up a fitness treasure hunt. Do you have any interesting tips on how to stay motivated on your health journey?
