4 Reasons why you must try a Barre workout and why you will fall in love with it.

It is time for you to raise the Barre! Pun intended. Maybe you are a seasoned weight lifter, yogi, Pilates lover or dedicated runner, maybe you are brand new to the world of fitness. Either way you are guaranteed to enrich your life both physically, mentally and emotionally.

Now you are probably asking, what the hell is Barre anyway and what is all the fuss about? Barre is a low impact, ballet inspired, full body workout packed with mindful, intricate movements designed to use the smaller muscles in the body that you are most likely not using in a majority of your workouts or day to day activities. There are different types of Barre depending on the studio you go to, some may incorporate a lot of choreography, while others may be a little more fitness based. Often times there is a large portion of the class spent on the Barre very much like a ballet class, however there are Barre-less classes as well focusing more on bodyweight and fitness equipment such as: light weights, bender balls and resistance bends.

The good news is that if you don’t have access to a Barre, you can use the back of a chair, a kitchen counter, a stair rail or a very sturdy desk. Here are 4 reasons why you must try Barre now.

  1. It will make you feel beautiful

Everyone has the right to feel beautiful, and due to its ballet-like/dance-like nature, the use of classic ballet movements like Plies, Eleves or Releves, gives this class an elegance and gravitas factor that other workouts just can’t compete with. Many of my participants, including professional ballerinas and beginners alike have shared with me, that Barre has given them a new sense of vitality and beauty they haven’t experienced in a long time or never before. Not to mention all the toe pointing and lengthening through out the body really brings out your inner Prima Ballerina.

2. Improved Posture

You can boost your mood and increase serotonin levels in the brain simply by improving your posture. Barre class holds a strong emphasis on posture through strengthening the core, spine and glute muscle. It will very quickly become second nature for you to pull the shoulders down, open up the chest and stand tall with pride wherever you will go because you will practise this over and over in every single Barre position.

3. Better range of motion and flexibility

We all know that ballerinas are the most flexible human beings next to contortionist, stretches and big/long movements are greatly interwoven through out a barre session boosting, flexibility, and increasing range of motion.

The multitude of hip openers you will experience in a Barre class will make your hips feel strong, open and mobile.

4. Stronger Muscles and healthier joints

I can not stress how much stronger you will feel if you incorporate Barre into your life, I remember when I first started, it only took 3 to 5 sessions for me to see and feel a major difference in my thighs, glutes, back, core and overall muscle strength and endurance. As I mentioned before a typical Barre class utilizes the small muscles between the joints, waking up all the sleepy parts of your body which don’t get much action otherwise.

So remember folks, raise the Barre, point your toes and bring out your inner Prima Ballerina, we all have one and they are waiting to come out like a hungry lioness tramped inside inside your being.

A few good ways to get started are checking out a local Barre class or jumping on YouTube for beginner barre classes. My personal favorites are: Fit by Coach Kell, Andrea Robertson Health and Barre and Sleek Technique-Ballet Fitness.
